LAHAINA, Maui — Roads and an airport were reopened Wednesday as firefighters continued to battle a west Maui brush fire.
Maui officials said the fire above Kahana ridge was 45% contained Wednesday. About 1.5-square miles had burned, threatening some homes, prompting evacuations and forcing the closure of the Kapalua Airport on Tuesday.
The state Department of Transportation said the small airport reopened Wednesday morning for normal operations.
Maui County spokesman Brian Perry said officials are checking to assess damage and looking into unconfirmed reports of burned or singed roofs.
County officials said about six people checked into a shelter at the Lahaina Civic Center on Tuesday, but no one stayed overnight. The shelter was closed Wednesday.
There were no reports of injuries.
